Most people would say that bread should be avoided if they want to lose weight or stay slim because it’s fattening. The right answer is ‘no’ – because the notion that bread makes you fat is a myth.
One slice of bread (not sourdough) from an average commercially produced loaf weighs in the region of 25 – 35 grams (of which only one gram is fat) and contains between 60 – 75 calories. Now that’s just about the same as a small apple!. Bread is not only low in fat, it’s also high in fibre and contains many vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health.
Carbohydrates are actually the best way for a body to get energy – despite what the followers of the protein-rich diets say. Around 70% of the calories contained in bread come from complex carbohydrates which means the humble slice is a powerhouse of energy. It’s also important to note that complex carbohydrates contain four calories per gram compared to fat, which contains nine . When kickstarting a day then, does it make sense to have a high protein and high calorie breakfast as opposed to an energy-rich carbohydrate one?.
As the nutritionists say, the key to losing weight and maintaining a healthy balance is to decrease the number of calories taken in and increasing the number of calories used. At least half of the total calories should come from complex carbohydrates, which means that daily bread is a must. Plus, breads and grain products satisfy appetites, keeping people fuller for longer.
The World Health Organisation recommends that people eat bread several times a day, with a number of European countries recommending a daily bread intake of around 4 – 8 slices, totalling around 250g. The guidelines for healthy eating plans vary according to age, size, gender and activity levels, but a general estimate is 1 600 calories for sedentary women and older adults, 2, 200 calories a day for children, teenage girls, active women and many sedentary men with 2 800 calories for teenage boys and active men. To lose weight, a guideline is around 1200 calories a day (5 000 kilojoules), but it’s always advisable to consult a professional before starting any diet.
The bread itself is fine – it’s what goes on top that can cause the problems. Loads of extra calories sneak on with sugar-laden toppings such as jams and preserves, with butter, peanut butter etc full of calorie-laden fats . Bread can – and should – be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet – either on its own or combined with low fat toppings such as fresh salad, lean protein, hummus, reduced-fat butter and margarines etc.
Wholegrain breads containing lots of digestive fibre are a nutritious choice, particularly in light of the fact that many nutritionists recommend beetween6 and 11 serves of grain foods a day. There are obviously some breads that are healthier than others in terms of their sugar and fat content, nutritional value etc. For example, a– so if you’re watching what you’re eating, save the special breads for special treats.
There’s a move towards organic, hand-made bread products say Perth bread specialist, Abhi’s Bread with more and more people looking for healthy, hand-made breads that are purely natural with no added preservatives. Sourdough bread is becoming increasingly popular as it has a lower GI (glycaemic index) than ordinary bread so it keeps people feeling fuller for longer, with multigrain, wholegrain and rye breads containing loads of bran are also nutritious and popular.
There is an old saying dating back to biblical times that ‘bread is the staff of life’. Bread many not be a proverbial walking stick today – but it remains a valuable and vital component of any healthy and balanced diet.
