Vermont Quarter

Vermont Quarter
From California to Vermont………….big change right?

lets say im moving from malibu to… burlington and im taking my horses with me (TB and Quarters)
is this a very drastic change? if i really need to take them with me what the hell should i do??
any recommendation???????

If you make the move I’d recommend that you find a professional hauler to do it. Many professional haulers have very nice comfortable trailers for your horses and many have a lay-over facility that is centrally located so your horse can get a break mid-haul. If the horses are decent haulers and you have a good outfit moving them it shouldn’t be that bad or stressful. If your horses are bad haulers moving them that far may not be the best idea.

If you plan on making the move do it as soon as possible. You want to give them as much time as possible to acclimate. The fall weather will help encourage your horses natural hair coat so they are prepared for the cold and snow. My STB spent every winter in Florida training before I took him off the track. He had no problems adjusting to the cold in Michigan. His first winter he got a super long thick coat sort of like he overcompensated, but he did just fine. I made sure he had enough hay to stay warm and kept a very close eye on his weight. After his first winter he got a more normal winter coat. I know more then a few people who have brought up horses from down south without a problem, but they always did the move Spring-Fall. I’m guessing a horse brought up in the winter would have problems.

If it was me and my horses I would take them with me. My horses are excellent haulers and while technically the hauling cost would probably cost more then what they are worth they are irreplaceable to me. If that isn’t true with you and your horses (which there is absolutely nothing wrong with) then you may want sell before moving.
