Unc Morgan

Unc Morgan
Question for all you coin collectors out there! Please help me to decipher this coin!?

I bought a coin off ebay. It is a Morgan dollar. What exactly does this mean as this was the title “1880 S MS BU UNC Morgan Dollar”. So what does S MS BU UNC mean exactly? Thanks!

you have an 1880-S (San Francisco mint) Morgan dollar is MS (mint state) UNC (uncirculated). The seller kind of did an over kill on the grade or really did not know what they were doing in the first place. These days the term Mint State is used with a number from 60-70 to grade uncirculated coins. an MS-60 coin is uncirculated but may have bag marks or the luster and strike are not so hot. As you go up towards MS-70 the coins has less or no marks the luster becomes perfect and the coin well struck. The term UNC is only used as a generic term these days. They are never used together. You need to look at the eagles feathers on the breast and make sure there is no wear what so ever as well as the hair over liberty’s ear to make sure there is no wear. Use a magnifyer to look at the fields the area with no images for small scratches. If there the coin was cleaned. Hope this helps.
