Coumn Candles – Beautiful, Affordable Yet Easy to Make
Unlike taper candles which are much smaller, often 5/8 of an inch in diameter, column candles have much wider base, are made with a great deal more wax and will burn many times longer than their thin and more elegant looking taper candle; they are also more dripless because of their diameter.
However column candles have a classic no-nonsense look that is timeless. And the best thing of all they are dead-easy to make, and add a bit of charm and elegance to any setting and often are used to accent some area of the room or something in the room.
It’s an really easy to get yourself started making some beautiful column candles. Your favorite colorings, a decent grade of parafin wax and some wicks is really all that you’ll need. Regarding the equipment you’ll need to make candles, a double boiler is essential. It should be noted that because of the size of pillar candles bees wax is a poor choice as it doesn’t hold up well like paraffin wax. Then again if you don’t intend to actually burn the candle then bees wax is fine as it often looks more elegant than paraffin wax.
To get started, you’ll need a mold the size of the candle you wish to make, then coat the inside of the mold with a common cooking spray so the wax doesn’t stick to the sides of your mold. The next step is to melt the paraffin wax and dip the wick into the wax. It’s a good idea to make sure that your wick is at least two or three inches longer than the candle’s actual length as you need to keep in mind that you must trim it to a finished length when it cools.
Insert the wick from the bottom of the mold. Then to make sure it is straight you have to put tension on the wick. Simply tie it on to something staight and long enough to span the mold like a pencil or a chopstick. Check and make sure that your wick is dead center in your mold and it is the correct thickness for the gauge of the column candle you intend to make.
With your wax melted now is the time to add colorings or any fragrances you might want to add. The sky is the limit here, even black candles are okay, so be creative. There are more ideas on candle making than you can shake a stick at on the internet. After that just pour the melted wax into the mold and allow the candle to sit and cool. It’s a good idea to leave the candle sit right where you pour the wax. Allow your column candle cool completely (cool to the touch) before you pull it out of the mold.
Next trim the wick to about 1/4 inch over the top of the candle. Any higher than this will make the candle start to smoke.
Column or pillar candles make great gifts for friends and relatives, are easy to make and are affordable. The sky truly is the limit on fragrances and appearances you can give your very own hand made column candles.
