LEDs in the “Colours of the Rainbow”
LED lights are one of the hottest technologies recently becoming available in household lighting. LED technology, however, has been invented at the beginning of the 20th century, but was not suitable for household lighting purposes.
Those, who only came across the technology of LED lighting recently, in its present form, it may sound strange that coloured LEDs existed before their white versions; since previously used lighting technologies existed primarily in a white light form.
LED technology is based on the light emitted by various semiconducting elements when current is run through them. The colour of the light depends on the components included in the LED. The order of inventing and developing different colours of LEDs came the following way: first red LED was introduced in the 1960′s, which was commercially usable. Then in the seventies more colours were introduced, namely green, orange and yellow.
White colours could only be produced with the introduction of the blue LED, which made it possible to create white light with more than one methods. The creation of blue LED light was the most difficult, because the light intensity of early blue LEDs were not high enough to be detected by the human eye (the human eye detects yellow and green colours the most easily).
The creation of blue light also made RGB technology possible, allowing the creation of any tone of light with the help of the red, green and blue lights. This is one of the ways white light is actually created: if all three lights (red, green, blue) are released a white light is created. Another way of creating white light is with the help of phosphor (called phosphor-based LEDs). With this technology an originally blue or sometimes yellow LED gets a phosphor layer creating a bluish cold white or a yellowish warm white colour.
The difference the tones of white lights emitted is measured with in Kelvin as its colour temperature; the higher the Kelvin rate is, the cooler the light appears.
