Perfect toy for a 2 year old boy?

It’s my nephew’s birthday- last year I got him a Red Flyer Wagon and it was a big hit. What are the other must-have (classic, timeless) gifts for toddlers? What toy has endured over time in your home?
Are legos safe for 2 year olds?
Warren D- Shouldn’t girls be given toys that encourage building and operating things? I’m an engineer, so of course I think so!

Actually, you can’t do better than LEGO toys if you want to give your nephew a building toy. LEGO makes a wide range of toys for tots– and people like me who never quite grew up. LEGO specifically makes DUPLO toys for toddlers. Check out the first link below for some product ideas from LEGO Shop. One of the great things about LEGO toys is that your nephew will be able to incorporate his DUPLO toys with traditional LEGO pieces as he grows older because they’re designed to snap together. I know because I have both toys and I’ve mixed the two when building with my four-year old nephew.

Some other toys you should consider, however, are trains. My nephew loves Thomas & Friends and he has the complete LEGO DUPLO set, as well as many pieces from the wooden railway sets, which he’s owned since he was two. BRIO and Eichhorn also make great train sets and the tracks are interchangeable with Thomas & Friends wooden railway systems.

Other toys you might consider include plastic Bob the Builder toys, wooden Jay Jay the Jet Plane toys, dinosaur replicas from Safari, Bullyland, Papo or Schleich or plush reptiles from Wild Republic, which makes uncommon stuffed animals, too. I’ve added links to various sites below.
