Looking backwards to move forwards: redundancy and career planning in a recession

The credit crunch was the catalyst for a crisis that almost no one could have predicted in terms of its size and scale. No one was safe from experiencing its impact. With the issue of redundancy plaguing many a board room, vast numbers of staff were suddenly forced to consider emergency career planning strategies. Dealing with this subject was always going to be difficult, but when it came to it, should businesses have been more prepared?

Research suggests redundancy was poorly handled

Recent research suggests that many UK companies were caught unawares when it came to managing HR in a crisis. In a survey of over 1,000 job seekers conducted at the beginning of this year, over a quarter of those taking part believed that their redundancy was handled poorly by HR, while just over half were given no extra support by their employer. In these cases, in particular, businesses appear to have lapsed in their duty of care to their staff.

Businesses are likely to feel the impact

Ironically enough, the bad handling of redundancies, including the lack of any career planning advice to help people move forward, can actually have a serious and negative impact on employers as well as the employees concerned.

When news spreads by word of mouth the effects can be far reaching. If former employees have grievances to get of their chest over the handling of their redundancy then this can seriously dent the reputation of the business involved. Equally as important is the morale of staff who remain employed. Witnessing colleagues being traumatised unnecessarily only spreads feelings of negativity and suspicion.

A business that has left itself open to criticism may find that when the crisis is over and a period of recovery in the marketplace begins, hiring new staff is all the more difficult due to low staff morale and brand damage. At the crucial point when fortunes can finally be turned around, a business could find itself reeling from the effects of its ill-advised actions when times were difficult.

How did this happen?

The rapid evolution of communication online was a factor that took many HR teams by surprise. Previously, businesses could at least deal with difficult staff issues away from the scrutiny of the media and wider public. As social media frenzy took control, however, it was suddenly a lot harder to keep company business private. This exposed huge vulnerabilities in those brands not willing to get involved in managing the conversations themselves.

Another factor may simply have been that many UK businesses had been lulled into a false sense of security by the seemingly never-ending ‘boom’ that the UK economy had been experiencing. When crisis inevitably took hold, HR team were thrust into unexpected territory.

Fortunately, there is hope for many of the employees who have become victims of redundancy. The career planning tools available online can help people not only get back to work, but to find a career that is even more rewarding than the one they left behind.

Shrewd businesses, meanwhile, will be reviewing their handling of the crisis and getting their systems and processes in shape. If and when disaster strikes again, both companies and staff will then be able to move forward much more positively.
