Adopting A Golden Retriever
If you have just adopted a Golden Retriever puppy or are considering it, there are a few things you should know regarding the breed and the adoption process. Golden Retrievers make excellent pets and are known for their friendly disposition and their utter devotion to their owners. Like all new pets, however, they do need the proper attention and care for them to be happy, healthy, and balanced.
Golden Retrievers were traditionally bred as gundogs for retrieving birds during hunts. They are highly intelligent and have a need to please demeanor as pets. Currently, they are ranked the fourth most popular family dog in the world.
Appearance
There are three different colors that this breed is available in: English White Golden, Medium Golden, and Red Golden. All dogs in this breed have brown eyes and usually weigh no more than seventy-five pounds. They are considered large but are definitely not the largest in the dog species.
Temperament
Due to the uncanny intellect of these canines, these animals are extremely sensitive to the wants and needs of their owners. They have a never ending supply of energy and seem to never get tired. Golden Retrievers are known for their outdoorsy natures and would make wonderful pets for active families who don’t mind taking their pet camping or exercising. Their happy go lucky attitude means that everyone is their friend as often they don’t have problems with strangers or other animals. If you have other dogs or animals in the house, a Golden Retriever would be an excellent breed to bring home and add to the family.
Possible Problems
Although this breed is loyal and loving overall, they often have such an increase in energy that young children and elderly individuals may not be able to adequate control the dog. This is especially an issue due to size of the breed. This can be circumvented, however, by proper training and not leaving your child or older family member alone with the dog. This should only be necessary in the beginning since the Golden Retriever will quickly learn what is expected of him or her.
Chewing
Like many dogs, Golden Retrievers have an affinity for chewing. This is a lifelong enjoyment that, if left unsupervised, can cause problems for your household. Always be sure to offer your canine specific toys and treats as acceptable chew items. It is best to take the time early in their puppyhood to teach them the rules of the home. This is the only way they will learn and become the loving and loyal pets that we want and love.
If you’re considering adopting a Golden Retriever, or have already adopted one, be sure to raise them in a loving and consistent way. Always use positive reinforcement since this breed is a lover of affection, and exercises them daily. Puppies already have an excess of energy so the addition of their natural energy levels suggests additional play time or stimulation. This will keep your puppy balanced and easy to train. With a Golden Retriever, you will have a best friend for life!

Abbey Road (Remastered) $9.10 The Beatles’ last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side’s writing, John Lennon’s hard-rocking, “Come Together” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” make the strongest i… |
