Helicopter license, Silver State Helicopters?
I am thinking about goign to Silver State Helicopters to get my licenses. How practical is it go this route, and when will I start making decent money?

You should do some serious research into this school before signing up. There are many good alternatives and I recommend that you look into them. Here is a website that lists flight schools so you can find one near you:

Vertical Reference also has discussion forums where you can read what others have said about each flight school, and about the helicopter industry in general. When picking a flight school you should first avoid those that require the entire payment up front. Don’t get trapped in a bad situation. Also make sure you plan ahead carefully for the expense of training. Determine exactly how the financing will work before you begin. Do your homework, and learn from the experiences of others. You want to investigate the availability of aircraft as well, lest you get stuck only flying once per week even though you want to fly every day.
Once you finish your licenses, your first job will most likely be flight instruction. Typically you will instruct until you have about 1000 hours of flight time, and then you will be eligible for other jobs, such as offshore flying in the Gulf of Mexico. Instructing typically does not pay well, which is tough since you just forked over so much for training. But, once you get your first 1000 hours, you can get the decent paying jobs. Do not be lured into believing that helicopter pilots make huge salaries at their first jobs, though. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There are jobs that do pay very well, but you will have to get a lot of experience first.

After reading the posts below, I had a few additional thoughts. (I’m sorry guys, no disrespect, it’s just my opinion.)
- Many schools do not require a 70k contract to begin training.
- Many schools do hire their own graduates, but do not assume that you will automatically get a job with them after graduating. There may not be enough positions available to accommodate all graduates.
- Delays will always cause you to spend more money, but try to find a school that will not penalize you for taking a break from flying, or for failing to complete the training for some reason. You never know what is going to happen, don’t let yourself get stuck.
- With regard to safety, you can always check if the school you plan to attend has any accident records. Go to the NTSB website, and do a search with the name of the school, and see what comes up.

- CAVEAT EMPTOR, when looking at ANY flight school. You’re making a huge investment in time, effort, and money. Give this decision the careful consideration and research it deserves.
