The HL 1650 Toner, Low Cost Yet High Quality Printing

Many people feel that high quality printing must inherently be expensive. The Brother HL-1650 proves that to be incorrect. The HL-1650 combined with the HL 1650 toner cartridge provides high quality, fast printing for the home office or the small business workgroup. The HL-1650 can provide printed page outputs of up to 16ppm. Print quality can be selected to up to 1200 dpi. An automatic duplexer is provided in the HL1650 as a standard feature.

Brother has provided two data input ports on the HL-1650. These two ports are USB and parallel. When the HL-1650 is included in the small business workgroup environment, the 10/100 Base TX Ethernet print server must be purchased. Utilizing the HL-1650 in the stand alone mode, connected to one computer through the parallel port provides the highest print output rate. When the HL-1650 is placed into a network environment, print output rate decreases by approximately 33%.

Memory upgrades are available for the HL-1650 from Brother. These memory upgrades increase the memory from the 8mb that is provided to memory chips that expand the memory to 136mb. The memory upgrade provides an uninterrupted output rate when the printer is in a networked workgroup environment.

Lowest costs per printed page are achieved through use of a specific toner cartridge and drum combination. The HL 1650 printer cartridge
is a high capacity toner cartridge that will print 6500 pages. The DR500 drum has a 20,000 page capacity. When this toner cartridge and drum combination is installed in the HL-1650, printed page rates are estimated at $0.02 per page.

Installing the HL-1650 is a simple and easy task. Utilizing the Quick Print setup utility, choices can be made which are utilized globally in the use of the HL-1650. These choices can include multi page layouts, paper type and which tray the paper will be drawn from and access to Driver Properties. The Quick Print utility can be placed either in the system tray or in its own window on the computer. Driver Properties include the addition of watermarks to the page printed. For graphics reproduction, there is a manual control for brightness and contrast.

The highest print quality provided by the HL-1650 is 1200 dpi. While this high quality printing is desirable for final reports, it is not necessary for draft copies. When draft copies of reports or documents are desired, the print quality can be reduced to as low as 300 dpi. The 300 dpi quality, while not suitable for final documents is well suited for review and corrections. There are several factors that determine how quickly a document is to be printed. These factors include which port is utilized to input data, the quality of the print desired and the amount of graphics included in the report.

Duplex printing provides problems for many users. To reduce the duplex printing problems Brother has included a duplex printing feature on the HL-1650. The duplex printing feature provides several options including six discrete alignment settings. There is also a manual duplex function should the user choose to utilize it during the printing of the document.

The low initial cost of the Brother HL-1650 when combined with the HL 1650 printer toner and the DR500 drum provide an economical yet high quality solution for the small business or the home office. The multiple options combined with the highest quality output provide the small business or home office that ability to produce documents that rival those produced by major corporations in a minimal amount of time.
