Is it more important for a stock to show growth in earnings from the previous quarter or from the year before?
which one is more important? is good idea to invest in a stock that shows higher earnings for each quarter, but earnings were significantly down from the year before quarter?
You have to also figure for seasonality and special events. A retail company that has a super fourth quarter that ends with December but a lousy first quarter that ends with March is normal. If XYZ sells retail coffee, then it should be going great guns all winter and business depressed all summer.
I had some money in a pharmaceutical a while back, exellent profits, oodles of cash, but the price kept falling so that it was in danger of being delisted. They merged with another similar company and the applied purchase value was close to 50 percent more than it was selling for before. Their earnings and the merger partner earnings will be pretty deceptive in the next period. With larger companies, mergers that are primarily buyouts of small companies happen all the time and they can give misleading notions of the flow of business.
It is important to show earnings growth from the previous quarter, it is nice to have earnings growth from the previous year as well, but if there are special situations that helped cause those numbers, you may be unnecessarily disappointed next quarter, or next year, as the company digests changing situations. I would say quarter before year, if that is all I had to go one, but if you can’t see what brought the change then either keep looking into the company, or check out another company to look into.
