Beach Prospecting For Treasures And Trinkets
If you enjoy going to the beach near where you live, or perhaps where you go on holiday, you might consider doing some beachcombing. It is very fun to discover fascinating and possibly valuable trinkets in the sand. Perhaps you will find one or more things that are worth a lot of money. But even if you just want to prospect on the shore for personal amusement, a beach walk is an excellent way to get some fresh air and exercise.
To maximize your chances of finding plenty of interesting objects, try to tailor your beach visit. If you check to see when the tides are at their low point, you will have more area to search in. You may also be the first to spot something that has just been washed ashore. If you can find a beach less visited by crowds, you will also have less competition for whatever treasures are there. However, do not go anywhere really remote by yourself, for safety reasons. Take a beach-loving friend or two with you.
In order to make your beachcombing trip more comfortable and carefree, make sure some basic supplies are on board before you set off. Towels are always good to have, and either a hat or sunscreen to protect against getting sunburn. If you prefer, gloves of some waterproof material will shield your hands from wet sand and sharp objects. Of course, you will need something to hold the treasures you will be finding, such as plastic bags or containers. To keep sand from making a mess when you return to your car, a cordless handheld vacuum will be the perfect tool. Make sure you have plenty of water or other drinks available. If you really want to get serious about prospecting, a metal detector would be ideal to find objects beneath the sand, but this is not essential.
If you are lucky in your prospecting, you may find some beach glass. This is much sought after by collectors and also by jewelry makers, who fashion it into unique pieces such as pendants and rings. Beach glass is bits of broken bottles or other objects that have been worn smooth by being tumbled around in the ocean for long periods. This, as well as contact with sand and other materials, produces a frosted look and texture.
If you have brought a metal detector, you may be able to find jewelry buried under the surface of the sand. But often, too, it will be in plain sight, perhaps just washed ashore that day. People lose all sorts of objects while swimming or surfing, such as men’s watches, ladies’ rings or earrings, and so on. Once they disappear under the waves, they are difficult for the swimmer to recover, but you may be the lucky one who finds them eventually.
When you return from your beachcombing excursion, the fun begins of inspecting your treasures and perhaps finding something of financial value. First, though, you need to find an area where you can spread them out and work on them. If you have a garage with a work area, that is excellent, or else perhaps a computer workstation desk you are no longer using. These generally have several levels of shelves and storage spaces that are ideal for this purpose.
If your beachcombing trip has been successful, you now have the fun of cleaning and admiring your new treasures. There are many cleaning agents and polishes for different materials, and a little bit of research with tell you the best ones to get for your purposes. A set of brushes, such as old makeup brushes, would be nice to have too, for cleaning sand and other debris out of crevices. Perhaps more research online will reveal that you have found an item of some value. But if not, at least you have had an enjoyable trip to the beach.
