series 1985 hundred dollar bill coin collecting?
So, today I cashed my paycheck, and one of the bills was a series 1985 100 dollar bill. It isn’t everyday that you see these old fashioned bills, much less a 100 dollar version. I was just wondering, when these bills are expecting to be no longer be in circulation, and what the value of one could possibly be in the future or today.
No one can say what anything will be worth in the future. Today, that bill might be worth a small premium over face value if it’s circulated with a light fold or two but still crisp. A mint-fresh one could be worth a premium of up to 50%.
But, you cannot discount the effects of inflation on holding paper money rather than investing it. Had a collector put a brand new 1985 bill away in 1985 (and many 1985 bills were printed years later, the series shown on a note is not always the year of printing), and that bill was worth the 50% premium, or $150, that collector lost value due to inflation, as opposed to investing it in a US Savings Bond that earned only 4% a year. Many, many mutual funds have had a higher return than 4% a year for the last 25 years. But at 4%, your money doubles in 18 years. So that $100 bond you bought in ’85 was worth $200 in 2003, and is worth roughly $260 today. That bill is worth only $150. And that’s for a mint one.
Could a bill outpace other investments, and inflation, over the next 25 years, or however long you want to hold it? Possibly. That’s something you’ll have to decide. I advise against it.
