Disaster In The Pacific: 7 Lessons For Life
The incredible destruction from the tsunami in Japan should be a wake up call to each of us.
#1 – Enjoy Life – There are no guarantees of survival. Then time is precious. Spread the joy of life to those around you. Look around you and see all the little things you can appreciate. Take a long walk through the woods and have a picnic.
#2 – Be Prepared – While luck is a factor (bad time / bad place), knowing what to do and remaining calm enough to do it is critical. As soon as possible, take a first aid course. In a disaster like the earthquake in Japan, you may have to be the doctor until help arrives. You don’t want to be a problem; you can solve the problem.
#3 – Eat Right and Exercise – emergencies put tremendous stress on the human body. Mental and physical reserves are stretched to the max. You will have more fight if you are fit. You will have the strength to hang in there and keep fighting.
#4 – Always Carry Survival Items On You
- A Whistle (lost – being abducted – confronting a wild animal or buried under rubble)
- Water – carry an unopened bottle
- First Aid Kit – at least a small one and know how to use it
- Multifunction Tool – containing a knife, saw, screwdrivers and more
- Weather Gear – hat, gloves, poncho, and space blanket
Goggles and Mask – for smoke and dust protection
- or Mask Hood protecting head and full face – in case of biological or chemical attacks or dust and smoke
#5 – The Ying-Yang of the Japan earthquake – Find the balance – Japan’s tragedy becomes your awakening. Realizing you are un- or ill-prepared can cause panicky feelings. Stop! Take a deep breath – now breathe. Find the balance between obsession and ignorance. Take inventory of your survival supplies. Research your options. Stock extra food and water for car and home.
#6 – Do Not Wait – Take Action! Why? – The Japanese tsunami gave little notice. You cannot wait to get prepared. Knowledge, supplies, and gear are your only defense against disaster. Things are going to get better soon. Yes, it will take money to buy sufficient supplies. You just need to be organized and set priorities. Make steady progress daily, if possible.
#7 – Learn From History Or You Will Be Its Victim – As I write this, the Japanese tsunami / earthquake is the 5th largest in Earth’s recorded history. I respect the Japanese. History taught them building design and construction. They have given priority to emergency preparation. Are you as prepared? No other nation on Earth was as prepared. The most powerful people on the planet are nothing compared to nature. You are responsible for your life – like that or not.
