Scarce Variety
Are the birds in our neighborhood snooty?
We were feeding them sunflower seeds and other large seeds, and birds from all over the neighborhood were flocking to our bird feeders. We saw a variety of species. Our backyard was the hot spot for birds, and we had as many as 20 at a time.
Then, we switched over to the small seeds, since the bigger ones were too expensive, and they were going fast. Suddenly, the birds stopped coming around, except for one or two. The whole neighborhood is covered in snow, and I can only imagine that food is scarce. Are they mad, or protesting in their own way? Before, the birds would wait for us to fill the bird feeders with the big seeds, so they anticipated our actions. Would they rather go hungry than eat the small seed?
No. We used to feed a good quality higher priced wild bird feed then all of a suuden the birds quit coming. It seems our neighbor went a step further and got the fancy stuff with berries and fruit in it. However she couldn’t keep up with the demand and they came back to us. The fancy stuff makes purple poop that is very hard to get off anything so we stick to the regular seed.
The small seed will only attract the smaller birds unless the birds are desparate for food.Maybe you could get a pound of sunflower seed and mix it with the smaller stuff. Go to a feed store like Agway. They may have a mix that suits you better. It is sometimes less wasteful to get the better stuff as the birds eat most of it.Hang a suet cake up and you will get woodpeckers,blue jays and cardinals. (also hungry cats so keep an eye out)
I put out my parrot leftovers . The blue jays love the larger pellets and the smaller birds go for the seeds and tiel pellets.
