Should the US continue to support so-called “free trade”?

If so, how do we ensure that America’s interests are served by it? How do we guarantee that transnational corporations are actually benefiting people, rather than just organizing a massive, destructive “race to the bottom” in terms of wages, social welfare, and living standards?

If not, how do we enable peaceful international cooperation without the impetus to do so provided by trade? How do we avoid conflicts over scarce resources as populations expand and the world develops?

Corporations have no incentive to try to drive consumers into the ground. If they did, who would buy their products and services?

Free trade agreements have not been good to us. We can buy cheap goods from China, but the Chinese can’t buy our expensive goods, hence our huge trade deficits. Besides, we don’t do much manufacturing anymore and have little to sell other than agricultural products.

We need to get serious about this problem.
