Rushmore Half

Rushmore Half
So Me and two of my best friends are going on a road trip when we graduate.?

What places should we go to it wont be for about another year and a half we plan on going to New York city Daytona Beach the four corners where your in 4 places at once and mount Rushmore it needs to be in driving distance but other then that not out of this country and someplace that 18 year olds would be allowed to do and thats fun. And do you think a GPS is good to get so we dont get to lost?
How much money should each of us save for gas, food and hotels? What are some good sites to use t help plan the trip?
And if i should get a GPS which one do you recommend?

How exciting is that! I did a similar trip with my mother when I graduated from High School and it is one of my favorite memories. Kango.com has great information on things to do in all of those sites, including reviews from people who have been there and done that. Here’s some great information for you:

Daytona Beach:

The Four Corners:

(this is on an Indian reservation in the middle of almost nowhere, plan on going in the middle of the day so you will have time to get to a hotel.

Mt. Rushmore:

From someone whose’s done it, some suggestions about your proposed trip: GPS is not necessary, everything is on major highways, besides getting a little bit lost may be fun. You are basically talking about circling the entire United States. If you’re cool with that, plan on taking at LEAST two months. The US is a big place, with lots of neat things to see, but if you want your friendship to survive, you do not want to be in a car for 8 hours a day. It would be a fun way to spend the summer though.

Gasoline: use Google or Mapquest to plot your course. It will give you mileage (and you can put in multiple destinations) and that will help you estimate closer the gasoline. A good guess of mileage would be about 10,000 miles. At 2.50 a galon and 25 miles/gallon that’s $1,000 minimum in gas. Divided by three would be about $350 each for a rough estimate. Don’t forget to add in the 5 oil changes you’ll need to get durring a trip that long and hard on your car and any other car repairs that will need to be done in the next 10K of miles on your car.

Hotels: Motel Six is everywhere and just about always the cheapes. Estimate $60 a night. Two months is 60 days. That’s $3,600. Or about $1,200 each. Check out http://www.couchsurfing.com if you’re interested in finding people to stay with along the way.

Misc. Costs: Food, etc. will probably cost you about $50-$100 a day per person. So estimate another $3,000 per person.

Total per person? About $5,000 for two months. Not bad for two months of continuious travel.

Other things to do? Check out http://www.roadtripusa.com for info about road trips. Also http://www.freetrip.com for route planning help. There are also some great sites like http://www.roadsideamerica.com which will help you find things to see along the way.

Have a great trip!
