Roll North

Roll North
why Roll the hay or bale it?

Coming from the new england area to florida I have notice farmer in the south roll their hay while up north they bale it, any reason? Just wondering.

up north baled hay is usually stored in a barn. The compact bales are easier to handle. Rolls are very large and heavy and usually need a machine to move them. They can be covered with large tarps if protection from rain is needed and they are usually left in the field where they are cut. If it is to be sold retail then bales can be moved easily. Rolls are not easily moved in a small 1/2ton pickup but need a large pickup (too heavy to lift by hand) or a medium duty truck or for larger amounts a flat bed truck. Many farms up north have their own baling equipment…in the south special equipment is brought in to cut and roll the hay.
