Red Sms

what does it mean on a blackberry, when i tried sending an SMS but it showed a red ‘X’ next to it?

it did have a tick next to it, but it didn’t show the little ‘D’ (which means the text hasn’t been delivered) but then after about 10 minutes the tick went and a red ‘X’ was next to the text? does it mean the text has failed to send, or it just hasn’t been delivered yet but will once they turn their phone on? thanks
