How can I seperate tomato seedlings?
I have a whole bunch of heathy sprouts in a couple of little pots. I’m a novice/beginner when it comes to gardening. I’m told that this is a rare variety & hard to obtain seeds for. I want to keep each & every sprout & have them become their own plant. How do I this? Thanks.
Very carefully. You will want to take something like a chopstick and make a beveled end with a saw or knife. (Bevel = Angle cut). Carefully drag one seedling away from another. This is called “dibbling”. It is a tool for “breaking out” seedlings gently from others. You may then pull on plant at a time but NOT if they resist. If you break off the bottom of the root where the fine hairs are – the’re dead.
Have a Small pot ready with damp potting soil (mixed with Perlite, Vermiculite, or even “Sharp Sand) sand. (Construction Sand) Or mix your own with a little light soil and one or all of the other ingredients. Use one cup of soil and 1 cup of each of the other ingredients. Dampen with a little water, and mix thoroughly.
If you squeeze the mix in your fist, and it drips; it’s to wet! Add Dry.
Make sure your pot, styrofoam cup, or even dixie cup – both of which I use for tiny transplants- has at least one pencil sized hole clean through the bottom. Paper cups can close. Later Drowning the plant. Check.
Fill the pot up to about 1/2 inch from the top with the soil mixture. Press it down with your fingers. Lightly, A little more pressure around the outside. Punch a pencil hole in it.
Grab the seedling by it’s “ears” (New false leaves that come out first (called Cotyledonsns) and GENTLY guide the root down into the hole made for it . Tomato plants can be set almost as deep as they are long.
Leave at least a half inch or better with the leaves. Best try to set close to the level at which they were to start. Use the Dibbler and one finger to guide the dropping in process.
GENTLY fold the hole closed and press LIGHTLY with to fingers down along side of the baby plant. Don’t break the delicate stem.
Water immediately. Best from below until you see the top of the soil darken with moisture.
Set in a Warm, Not Hot, medium light indoors to start.
After they look like they are growing – which they should in a day or two; over a 3 week period, introduce more light until they have full sun or equivalent for at least 6 hours gradually adding up to 10 daily.
