Parry-Romberg Syndrome Brings Lifetime Of Disability
Without surgery , eleven-year-old Honeycutt would have been resigned to a life of dramatic deformation and serious neurological difficulty. Clinically determined to have a rare autoimmune condition called Parry-Romberg syndrome, the left side of Honeycutt’s face stopped growing when she was five years old. The slim gray line of Parry-Romberg syndrome
At five years old, Honeycutt got a line on her head., it when right down the middle. Her parents assumed it was a bruise from something. Friends of hers would say it was ink. A doctor told Christine’s mom it was “discoloration” and prescribed a cream. This was after the mark stayed for a few weeks. The line got clearer as the months went on. The Honeycutt’s moved from Charlotte, N.C., to southern California so Christine could see a specialist. Unfortunately, the specialist gave the Honeycutt’s the same advice — keep Christine out of the sun — that they’d heard before. By the time young Christine Honeycutt was in first grade, abnormal weight gain, fevers and violent seizures began. Even though the right side of her face looked normal, the left side was swollen abnormally. A clear asymmetry had developed that a geneticist would diagnose a few years later (in 2008) as Parry-Romberg syndrome.
One in a million are afflicted by Parry-Romberg syndrome
More females than males end up with Parry-Romberg syndrome or progressive facial hemiatrophy. It is also very unusual as 1 in every 1 million individuals end up diagnosed with it. It is believed that Abraham Lincoln might have had it. This is just a guess though. Christine Honeycutt’s immune system was wreaking havoc on her left side, most notably in the face. It looked like Christine was cut with a sword on her face. This line on her face is the “coup of saber” or the “cut of saber.”. It was comparable to Parry-Romberg syndrome pictures found online.
“There were horrifying pictures,” said Vicki Honeycutt, Christine’s mother. “One side [of a patient's face] was a skeleton and the other side wasn’t.”
Treatment won’t occur, but treatments and surgical procedure can help out
Parry-Romberg syndrome doesn’t have a remedy for it. Facial rebuilding surgical procedure and immunosuppressant drugs could be beneficial, as has been the case so far for Christine Honeycutt. She has gotten closer to normal with the Extensive plastic surgery done taking seven hrs to complete. There’s nevertheless swelling that can be seen. She is healthy enough for school though.
“I like my nose better now,” she said.
