Quarters Problem
How do I solve this problem consisting of coins?
Need a little help with this problem:
A collection of coins consist of nickels, dimes, and quarters. There are 4 less nickels than dimes. There are 26 coins in total. The total value of the collection is $3.10 Find the numbers of each type of coin.
If someone could just give me the setup that would be great. I’m just having a little trouble with what to do with the quarters. Thanks.
Let x = number of dimes and y = number of quarters
then x -4 = number of nickles
x + y + (x-4) = 26 or 2x + y = 30
So y = 30 – 2x
10x + 5(x-4) + 25 y = 310 or 15x – 20 + 25y=310 or 15x + 25 y = 290
Substitute for y, getting
15x + 25(30-2x) = 290
Solve this for x and plug it into the small equation to find y
