We often use calendars in our everyday lives as a way to remember important dates and events in our lives such as doctors’ appointments, birthdays of loved ones, anniversaries and other special events. Many people have attempted to perfect the calendar. Time was recorded in cycles by using the days, months and years. The lunar cycle and solar system played an incredibly huge role in creating the calendar. One complete year equals three hundred and sixty five days, five hours, forty eight minutes and forty six seconds.

Lunar Calendars

There was a solar-year calendar created that was based on a period of nineteen years, and of seven of the nineteen years in this period they contained a total of thirteen months. If you add all of the months up in the period it totaled two hundred and thirty five months.

This nineteen-year period needed adjustment but as it was, it became the primary calendar for the Greeks, Babylonians, Jews and the ancient Chinese. Initially the Arabs used this calendar as well but later Muhammad decided it was best to keep with their twelve-month calendar instead of the thirteen months.

Egyptian Calendars

Egyptians created and used a calendar with a total of twelve months that included thirty days for a total of three hundred sixty days in one calendar year. Around 4,000 B.C. an additional five days were added to make it more similar with the solar year. The additional five days became days of festivity or celebration because it was thought to be unlucky for the people of Egypt to work during this time of the year. They believed that the solar year actually totaled three hundred sixty-five and a quarter days instead of three hundred sixty five days.

At some point their months fell out of sync with the actual seasons because they did not have a single leap day every four years as we do now, instead they allowed the quarter of a day to accumulate. Due to their miscalculation, the Egyptian’s seasons were so messed up that their summer months began in the winter time. As a result, only one time out of every one thousand four-hundred sixty years did their calendar align perfectly with the solar year. The Egyptians also had a religious calendar that they used.

There are a lot of different calendars out there that we all rely on to remain informed about things of importance. We can choose to give thanks to the Egyptians or we can thank our solar system that provides the natural ingredients that make a calendar all the more special to us.
