Spain Guide : Palacio Real In Spain
Madrid is known for the Palacio Real, which means Royal Palace, not only because of the monuments, sculptures, and gardens that encompass it but also for its elegant design. Occupied by a long series of Spanish rulers until 1931, the palace, which took 25 years to build, was once the center of power for a dynasty that ruled half the then-known world in the 18th century.
Even with 90 percent of the palace being closed off from public viewing, the remaining portion is still far larger than anyone could see in one day. In its splendor, the palace is made up of nearly 3,000 rooms with 240 balconies and over forty staircases, and one can behold its grand furniture, extravagant decorations, and grandiose ornaments all throughout.
You can see the Throne Room, which once operated as the war room for the world’s primary superpower, and also the Royal Armory, which features a large quantity of armor and weaponry in addition to implements of torture left over from the Spanish Inquisition.
A tour will also take you to the Royal Library, where a multitude of first edition books by Spanish authors are housed. You can stop by the Royal Pharmacy, where you can see what modern medicine was then. Stroll through the Royal Banquet Hall and listen to memories past of those famed rulers of Europe who once dined there.
Reveling in the view of the Manzanares River, watching the changing of the guards, and strolling through around the best gardens in Madrid, the Royal Gardens, are also highlights of visiting the palace.
A two hour, guided tour is the best way to learn Palacio Real’s history and see all of the sights. These tours cost around $30 and, to avoid disappoint, are best booked in advance as, particularly during the summer months, they sell out. Photography is prohibited, but you do have the option of purchasing picture books and postcards when the tour is over, so you can remember what you saw inside.
