Chick-Fil-A Bowl
After playing in consecutive Orange Bowls as the Atlantic Coast Conference champion, the 2009 Tennessee and Virginia Tech bowl game could probably be considered a bit of a disappointment for Virginia Tech. After all, they were used to playing in bigger bowl games. The Hokies certainly had higher expectations after consecutive conference championships. On the other sideline, Tennessee was more than happy to return to the bowl picture after sitting out in 2008. The fact that they were playing in Atlanta helped too. It was a short drive from their Knoxville campus, giving their fans a good bowl game to attend. It did not make a difference for the Volunteers though. Virginia Tech controlled this game throughout and cruised to a relatively easy 37-14 win.
Tennessee prowess was only felt during the second quarter after trailing by 14-0 as a result of Ryan Williams short touchdown runs. Tennessee saw themselves back in the contest with a set of scores of its own with Montario Hardesty, who is among the nations best running backs, scoring a four yard run with 6:43 left of the period. They continued to equalize the match in their subsequent possession with Denarius Moore catching a quick touchdown pass given by Jonathan Crompton. This was made with 18 seconds of the half remaining and it was certain in everyones mind that it would end as a 14-14 draw. This turned out not to be the case as Virginia Tech had something else in their mind.
Tyrod Taylor found Jarrett Boykin for a surprisingly long 63 yard pass that Boykin took down to the Tennessee four yard line with two seconds left in the half. That allowed Virginia Tech to regain the game’s momentum with a short field goal and a 17-14 halftime lead. The Hokies were able to roll from there thanks to a dominant second half effort on both sides of the ball. That allowed them to cruise to an easy win.
They dominated the defense during the second half of the game. They proceeded to ensure their opponents didnt make any score. They also regained a fumble. It was an extra ordinary performance from a team that had dominated the season. Not only did they control their defense but were also stunning in their offense led by Ryan Williams. He was dominant during the season even though he hadnt been the anticipated starter before Darren Evans picked a knee injury. Williams however did not disappoint as he continued to complete with a 1655 yards rushing in addition to 21 touchdowns during the season. In this game only he has 117 yards in addition to two touchdowns which saw him through a fabulous freshman season.
Tyrod Taylor and David Wilson each had short touchdown runs in the second half as the Hokies pulled away. Taylor also had a solid game passing with 207 yards through the air. The defense did a great job of containing Tennessee’s hardest, who was central to the Volunteers’ success this year. Hardesty ran for over 1,300 yards this year, but Virginia Tech held him to a season low 39 yards. Hardesty did manage to catch four passes for 79 yards, so his effectiveness was not totally limited by Virginia Tech.
