Quarter Rpm
bmw transmission problem?

hi. I have a 5 series bmw with an automatic transmission. Recently, the car doesn’t shift right. Sometimes it doesn’t shift after first or second gear, and even when it does , it shifts very late, past 3-4000 Rpm. But sometimes it shifts perfectly, i don’t understand this. in general, in cold weather bmw’s shift later than normal , at about 3000 rpm when the engine is still cold.. Now, i have a cooling system problem, the water temp gauge stays cold, it should be in the middle (warm) but its a quarter of the way in the cold section. Could this be related to the trans problem? thanks a lot for any info.

The issues are not related, on the engine temp 99% sure its your thermostat so have it checked out.

A transmission shifting slow is a sign of wearing out and getting old….some cars do this for 10 years others die quickly. I would say the best thing to do is to accelerate very very slowly for the first mile or two. Also not a terrible idea to give it 1-2 full minutes to warm up before you move the car. You could take it in to a deal and give the shift accelerators(I believe is the name, its been 5 years since I was in transmission classes) which are probably freezing up and causing the problems. They will probably cost you at least $400 to repair or more.
