Bobby Bowden Final Game
There was only one storyline that was going to come out of the 2010 Gator Bowl. Florida State head coach Bowden, who came into the game as the second winningest head coach in college football history with 388 victories, was retiring after 34 seasons at Florida State. In that time, Bowden won a pair of national championships and turned Florida State from a college football also-ran into a national power. It was a storybook career that ended on a bit of a down note with a 6-6 regular season. Ironically, Bowden faced West Virginia in his final game. Bowden coached the Mountaineers for six seasons before moving to Florida State.
His final game was a memorable one though, as the Seminoles overcame an early deficit to post a 33-21 victory.
Things did not start well for the Seminoles in this one. After the emotional lift of having Bowden himself plant the flaming spear at midfield in the pregame West Virginia jumped to a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jarrett Brown had a 31 yard rushing touchdown on the first possession of the game for West Virginia. Florida State then drove for a field goal, but West Virginia answered with another touchdown drive. Noel Devine had a 70 yard rush down to the Seminole four yard line and he later scored on a one yard plunge to make it 14-3. Devine would finish with 168 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 attempts.
While it certainly looked like a disaster in Bowden’s final game at that point, Florida State was able to recover in order to avoid Bowden’s first losing season since 1976. The Seminoles used another field goal and a 12 yard touchdown run by Jermaine Thomas to close the gap to 14-13 by halftime. The Seminoles then continued their dominance of the middle quarters with 10 more points in the third quarter, all while pitching a shutout defensively in both the second and third quarters. Those 20 points during that time period allowed Florida State to take firm control of the game. It was Thomas that added Florida State’s second touchdown with 3:50 left in the third quarter. His 19 yard run capped a brief 3 play, 55 yard drive and put the Seminoles in front 23-14 after three periods.
West Virginias Mountaineers came up with a great drive that allowed them a score in the final periods first play. Ryan Clarke tried to close the gap but only managed to give a 23-21 using a 5 yard run. However, the Seminoles quarterback, Manuel, answered using 81 yard drive to return Florida State to its comfortable lead. Manuel then finished with 2 yard drive. Florida State secured the win in the forth quarter by a field goal.
