Quarter Illinois
Is a quarter (US 25 cent piece) mint-marked “S” a counterfeit?
Got it in a change machine at the laundromat. Very shiny, lighter than other quarters. Mint stamp is not D nor P, but S. Illinois, 2003. Edges rather sharp.
The state series of quarters have always been marked D or P for Denver or Philadelphina mints. This seems very unusual for have an S, perhaps for the San Francisco mint.
“S” mint mark coins aren’t made for circulation, and only appear on proof coins made for the collector market. What happened in your case is that someone broke up a proof set and spent the coins. I have received proof coins in change before, myself.
Breaking up a proof set for spending money is very foolish because the coins are worth much more as a set in the original hard plastic case than face value, but my own son did it to me once.
