Proof Penny
*Proof* -1983- TEN Pence Coin – UNC- Proof- 10p coin-?

I’ve bid on such a coin on ebay by mistake thinking there was a collection. Don’t even know what Proof means, let alone if it makes it more valuable!

The term Proof referrs to a method of manufacture where the mint, in this case the Royal Mint, prepares special, more polished, coin blanks. These blanks are then struck into coins with more pressure than regular coins to bring up more detail. In the case of the coin you mention, they should have mirror-like fields (the areas on the coin where there is no design). Proof coins are sold at a premium to collectors and dealers and are most often worth more than face value. They should show no signs of use or abuse, or else they won’t be worth much at all.
Uncurculated coins are struck under normal pressure using blanks that aren’t specially prepared. They are intended for use by the general public as spending money. They are also many times sold to collectors and dealers at a premium.
In the case of the 1983 10 Pence pieces, I believe both types (unc. and proof) were only available from the mint and no circulation strikes where released for that year. I also believe that the uncirculated 1983 10 pence is worth a little more in this case, although both are prpbably worth a few pounds each.
