Problem Free
Is the free will/determinism problem a false dilemma?

Some things in life actually are black or white. What are some examples?

Thinking about the free will/determinism problem is it a false dilemma?

Depends upon what you consider to be determinism, if it is absolute then no, the two are indeed mutually exclusive and as such only one could be considered correct. However in some thoughts upon determinism it is seen as merely a cause and effect relationship that extends over a large period. Take for example Terry Pratchett’s short story “Death and What Comes Next” in which death reverses a philosophers argument when he asks him to kill his sleeping wife. The man claims he would never do so which is contradictory to his argument that somewhere in some parallel universe all things occur. Death then shows that since in none of those universes the man would kill his wife he has shown that through the man’s many decisions he has found himself in a deterministic event. Using this he then logically deduces that the same can be said of the man dying and that there is no way for him to prevent it any more than there is for him to kill his wife.

So Long answer short, it depends entirely upon definitions.
