I have a choral piece that has 7/8 and 5/8 in a very fast tempo. What would be the best way to conduct this?
Most 5/8 and 7/8 bars subdivide. 5/8 usually divides 2+3 or 3+2 (sometimes a mixture of both in different bars), while 7/8 will divide 3+2+2, 2+2+3 or 2+3+2. You need to work-out what the natural subdivisions are for each bar, mark them in your score (vertical lines for the 2′s and triangles for the 3′s) and then beat accordingly either short beats (2 x quavers/8th notes) or longer beats (3 x quavers/8th notes). Therefore, 5/8 will usually come out like 2/4 ‘with a limp’ and 7/8 as 3/4 ‘with a limp’. Once everyone is used to this, you will find it quite straightforward.
