Jules has a board that is 98 inches long. He wishes to cut the board into two pieces so that one piece will be 10 inches longer than the other. (Draw a picture!) What will be the length of each piece? Remember that one of the pieces should be 10 inches longer than the other. Use one variable, such as “x” to describe the quantities as “x” and “x + 10″. Your answer should say “inches” after it.
One piece of the board is x inches.
The second piece is x + 10 inches.
Combine both pieces together:
x + x + 10 = 98
2x + 10 = 98
– 10 -10
2x = 88
Divide by 2
x = 44
One piece is 44 inches
The second piece is 10 inches more, 54 inches.
