Military moving problem?

My husband and I live in washington right now and are going to be moved to Texas soon. He is in the army and we have a base about an hour from where we live now, and the base houses a lot of soldiers with his MOS. I have been taking care of my grandma who has stage 4 lung cancer and i’m worried about moving. Is there any way we could get our PDS transferred so I can still take care of my grandma?

He would have to qualify for a compassionate reassignment, which he would not qualify for a compassionate reassignment in this case. Unless she raised you, then the military would consider her your parent, making her immediate family. But then you have to prove there is no one else to take care of her. So it’s really hard, and pretty doubtful. Sorry.

You could stay, but there are some downfalls. Anything he does not move with him during the PCS would not be paid to be moved by the military. He would not qualify for military housing without a dependent actually living with him. He could not stay in the barracks and collect BAH. Basically he would have to get an apartment out in town. He would not qualify for family separation since it is a choice not to go. The spouse is never required to move with the service member, there are just downfalls to not doing so.

I am really not trying to be mean here, so please don’t take it that way- If grandma has stage 4, how long does she have left? I mean if the doctors do not think it will be to much longer, maybe you should stay. Have him move all of your things, and go and get on the housing list. He can set up an apartment for you guys, or whatever. Then when the time comes you can just drive/fly down to Texas.
