Oregon Quarter
How do you move to a different city?

I am seriously considering moving to Portland, Oregon, which is approx. 3 hours away from where I currently live. I’ve never looked for a job/apartment in another city before as I’ve lived here my whole life. I know there are online job seeking websites and websites like apartments.com, however, are there any tips anyone has for remote job/living quarters searches? Will most employers do phone interviews? I can’t afford to drive back and forth all the time. Any advice anyone has will be much appreciated.

Plan one day in which you can travel to Portland and do several interviews and/or look at apartments. You might have to do a couple days like this, but if you consolidate the list of things to do, you should be able to minimize the back and forth time. You should be able to do some talking over the phone to find out which jobs you are really interested in and are worth your taking the time to go to.

You could also save up enough money for a month’s rent and then just make the leap- move and look for a job after you move. It’s a little risky, so you must plan for the unexpected, have a cushion of savings and a fall back plan (if you don’t find a job quickly)- but it can be done.

The last hing would be to register with a temp agency. You could work for them and continue looking for a job. They can also help connect you with permanent employment- but just beware that they generally take a bite from your salary as part of their fees.

When I moved to Florida from Colorado, I was lucky in that I was moving in with my boyfriend. I was able to spend a little time looking and found something of a decent job- it was through a temp agency. I didn’t make much more than minimum wage though- But I know that the place I was employed by was paying more than that to the agency- it’s usually $2-$3.00 higher than the wage the temp worker earns. Still, it’s a good way to start.
