New puppy Very young needs tips?
I just got a very young puppy a rescue Only six weeks old She has just started on solid food
obv she would of been breastfeeding longer but shes a rescue , She seems very timid any tips?
Lie on the floor and let her come to you, cuddle with her on your chest for her to hear your heartbeat like she should still be doing with her mom, try to remain calm and loving with her, and be very careful with her as she is very young. Since you know about the solid food, did the vet or rescue tell you that you might still want to be putting water in it and heating it for a short time to ensure it’s warm not hot? Most people will say to feed a puppy more times during the day but make sure it’s not that much each time. Their stomachs are still small so they don’t need too much. Try a cup at first. If she eats it all, then stay at a cup. If she looks like she’s still hungry, add more. If she doesn’t eat it all, then cut it down and be ready to give her more as she grows. This can be done until she’s 8 weeks old which is best for her. You’ll want to go ahead and start training her to go outside to potty and house rules like no chewing on the furniture. This can be done through tone and firm voice without yelling or spanking her. If you start with the puppy pads, it’s really hard to go to the next level which is outside. Just skip the pads and go for training to go outside. Personally, when I get a foster puppy, I spray vinegar water on plants, around garbage can, and other places that can hurt them to chew on. This puts a really bad taste in their mouth, and the smell will quickly warn them not to chew there.
Since she is so timid, it shouldn’t take much to train her using your voice’s tone and firmness. Just remember to praise her when she goes outside and any other time for good behavior. Right now, the big thing is love and kindness.
Add on: At 6 weeks, she should pretty much be weaned if she was still with her mom. So, the puppy formula doesn’t apply anymore.
TWC! Loves me not.
