“Mythbusters” To Feature Obama In Episode About Archimedes
Barack President Obama may privately wish the Republican Pledge to America were the target of the next Mythbusters investigation. The topic instead will be the viability of the Archimedes death ray, a legend the Discovery Channel show first investigated in 2006. The White House science fair on Monday there was an announcement that Obama would be on a “Mythbusters” episode. Promotions for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, and the USA Science and Engineering Festival on the National Mall will all be things features within the White House Science fair. Mythbusters Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman have very specific instructions for the President Obama presence on “Mythbusters.” They’re to test the legend where mirrors were used to focus sunlight to set Romans on fire as they were invading a city by Archimedes who was a Greek scientist. “Mythbusters” tested the Archimedes death ray in 2006. Savage and Hyneman announced the myth “busted.”.
What’s the Archimedes death ray?
Archimedes was responsible for discovering principles of hydrostatics, like why a steel ship floats, and also found pi. Wikipedia explains that a “burning mirror” had been created by Archimedes so that when the Roman fleet invaded Syracuse in 214 BC, he could incinerate the ships. The Syracuse people were able to “hurl fire” which is mentioned within the earliest accounts of the battle which just states Archimedes was a genius. The Archimedes death ray had been started in a Byzantine historian about 800 years later. M.I.T. students tested the death ray in 2005, based on How Stuff Works. They used 127 one-foot square mirrors arranged like a parabola in order to set fire to a 10-foot long, one-inch thick wooden model of a Roman ship.
Mythbusters prove the death ray to be just a myth
In 2006, the M.I.T. students were asked by “Mythbusters” to demonstrate their Archimedes death ray. According to kwc.org, the students could only get smoke at 150 feet and flames at 75 feet. Archimedes would have had to focus morning sunlight. After all that preparing and construction, the sun needed to be out. The death ray would need an instant effect since the Roman ships were moving. Also, it would have been hard to light the sails which were a light color.
