1.Tim’s bank contains quarters, dimes, and nickels. He has three more dimes than quarters and six fewer nickels than quarters. If he has 63 coins, write and solve an equation to find out how many quarters Tim has.
2.Pilar bought 17 items for a camping trip,including tent stakes,packets of drink mix, and bottles of water. She bought three times as many drink mix as tent stakes. She also bought two more bottles water than tent stakes. Write and solve an equation to find out how many stakes she bought.

1. Let q = # of quarters
# of dimes = q + 3
# of nickels = q – 6
so, total # of coins = # of quarters + # of dimes + # of nickels
63 = q + q + 3 + q – 6
63 = 3q – 3
66 = 3q
q = 22 = # of quarters
# of dimes = 22 + 3 = 25
# of nickels = 22 – 5 = 17
2. let t = # of tent stakes
# of drink mix = 3t
# of bottles water = t + 2
so, total # = # of tent stakes + # of drink mix + # of nickels
17 = t + 3t + t + 2
17 = 5t + 2
15 = 5t
t = 3 = # of tent stakes
# of drink mix = 3t = 9
# of bottles water = t + 3 = 5
