Nickel Liberty

Nickel Liberty
how much is a 1901 liberty nickel worth?

i’ve looked online but it doesn’t seem like they go for very much. i did see one past bid of the same nickel i have on ebay that went for right over $500. the ones really worth something are the 1917 liberty nickels…do you collect coins or would you know how to go about seeing if this nickel is worth something?

Take a look at the site below. Except for the 1912-S and the impossibly rare 1913 (not 1917), anything from 1899 on is pretty common and not worth a lot in average circulated condition. Quite a bit more than face value, obviously, but not as much as what inflation has done over time. What cost a nickel in 1901 costs, on average, $1.27 today.

If you saw one that went for $500, it had to have been professionally graded MS65. Guide value on MS64 is less than that, and MS65 guide is around $650, so $500 sounds reasonable for an open-market purchase.

Guide on a Fine 12 is only $8, which is a lot less than what it costs to have the coin slabbed. And $8 is quite a bit more than what a Fine 12 actually sells for. A VF sold for $4.50 total, with good images provided, while a coin described as Fine but you couldn’t tell because the image was horrible, went for 55 cents.
