I have a commemorative coin from the Ingalls Shipbuilding Co when they launched the SS President Jefferson. T?
The front says 3rd Presidential 1801 – 1803 Thomas Jefferson. The back says “Long Tom” Author of Declaration of Indepemndence. Minister to France, Secretary of State, Purchased Louisanna from France, Greatest Scholar.SAGE OF MONTICELLO. Does anyone know if it is worth anything
This is a commemorative medal, not a coin (which is government-issued money). If it says ‘sterling’ or .925 or .999 along the edge, it’s silver and will have a value of at least its weight in silver. There may be additional collector value as well.
It’s most likely bronze, and if it is, there’s very little metal value there. Collector value would be less than a silver one unless it is a rare piece. You would need to have it looked at by some coin dealers who are expert in the small branch of coin collecting, or numismatics, called Exonumia, which is Latin for ‘outside of coins’.
