Mint Lot

Mint Lot
Did the confedrecy ever mint any coins see a lot of old notes at gun shows but really never see coins?

The CSA minted 4 half dollars using the 1861 US government obverse (front) die and a reverse die they made. You will never see one for sale at a gun show at least not the real thing. There are many copies out there though. The CSA contacted Robert Lovett jr of Philadelphia to make a cent. he did make the die and some trial pieces but was afraid he would get into trouble so they stayed hidden. he struck 12-15 in copper/nickel,55 in copper (proofs), 7 in gold (proofs) and 12 in silver (proofs). The original dies were bought by a coin dealer in the late 1800′s and restrikes were made, they are different from the originals a little. Then in 1961 Robert Bashlow made a die from the original that had die cracks and rust marks on it so they are on the coins he struck. I have one of these. The others are far to expensive and do not show up for sale often. the ones seen at flea markets came from civil war battle field souvenir stores and are not the real thing. You may also see a so-called CSA $20 gold piece it is a fantasy item and the CSA never even considered making any. Hope this helps.
