Battle of Saratoga Memorial?

The Battle of Saratoga, fought in New York in 1777 during the Revolutionary War, was one of the great turning points of that conflict. By defeating the British Army, the United States received diplomatic recognition from the King of France, and without that, we probably would not have won the war.

At the battlefield in Saratoga, there is a monument which contains the following inscription:

“In memory of the most brilliant soldier of the Continental army, who was desperately wounded on this spot, winning for his countrymen the decisive battle of the American Revolution, and for himself the rank of Major General.”

This person is not further identified.

Who is he?

I visited the battlefield last summer. It is Benedict Arnold, right behind the Northernmost redoubt.
