The United States originally wanted only to purchase New Orleans because of the important seaport. Jefferson feared we would eventually go to war with France. America’s Manifest Destiny, (westward expansion), also played a part in wanting Louisiana. France wanted to sell the entire territory not just New Orleans. France needed money for it’s army. The U.S. ended up borrowing 15 million dollars at 6% interest from Great Britain for the purchase. The Louisiana Territory was all the land west of the Mississippi river that had rivers flowing eastward. Thirteen states formed from the territory. The size of the United States doubled.
