Looks Better
What looks better on a college application, debate team or speech team?
Ok, so before I decide what to do, I need to know what looks better on a college application. I like both equally! It’s extremely hard to decide, so I’m asking you: What would look better? To know where I’m thinking of applying, here’s some I’m thinking about:
MIT
CalTech
Princeton
Yale
Harvard
Stanford
University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana (Safety)

As a former admissions committee member at one of those schools, I can say that I doubt there is any difference between debate or speech team in the eyes of any of those schools. What matters much more is that you stick with the one you choose. You should also know that neither team will add much to your application. They aren’t bad for your application, but if you have a reasonable shot at getting into those schools, having or not having debate (or speech) will not have much effect on the decision (unless it comes down to you vs. that guy and you have identical resumes except that you joined debate and he didn’t). When I read an application, I never paid any attention to the common extracurricular activities because EVERY applicant does something like that (or at that level). So do the one you are more interested in and don’t worry about it. And if you are truly equally interested in them, flip a coin, or join with a friend. This is not a big issue for your application.
