Not Long Until Mint Julep Time And The Kentucky Derby 2010
The Kentucky Derby 2010 is almost here, kicking off at 6 in the evening on Saturday, May 1. It will be on NBC. Churchill Downs marks the beginning of the Triple Crown, with Belmont Stakes and the Preakness not far off. Soon, quick cash will be bet, mint juleps drank, and fortunes won and lost.
The Kentucky Derby 2010
The Kentucky Derby 2010 is the start of the Triple Crown. It would probably be worth a payday loans worth to go. I do not encourage gambling, but here are the odds of the entrants from the Washington Post :
- Lookin’ at Lucky – given 3 -1. It isn’t always a blessing to be given top billing.
- Ice Box – 10 -1
- Noble’s Promise – 12-1
- Super Saver – 15-1

Those are the odds on the 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby 2010, and now for an interlude. (I’m not just horsing around.)
Bourbon of Proof
The Kentucky Derby 2010 has an official drink – the Mint Julep. A mint julep is traditionally made with bourbon, a type of whiskey Kentucky is famous for. Use a designated driver and always drink legally and responsibly. (The driver must be sober.) So without further ado:
Making a Mint Julep
You must have:
- Mint leaves, and a sprig of mint for garnish
- Sugar
- Seltzer
- Bourbon
- A Collins, Highball or Old Fashioned type glass
- Ice
- A pestle or similar implement; a wooden spoon can work
Then:
- Layer the bottom of the glass with mint leaves, and add sugar if you want to, but you can do that later
- Grind the leaves
- Add desired amount of ice, crushed is best
- Add about 2 to 3 fingers of bourbon
- Add seltzer
- Stir, add sugar or other ingredients to taste, and garnish with mint sprig
- Cheers!
Though I normally don’t advocate making a cocktail out of top shelf bourbons (like a good Scotch, straight or minimal rocks is best), I recommend using a good one, like Woodford Reserve (the brand the Kentucky Derby uses) or Maker’s Mark. My favorite is 1792 Ridgemont Reserve.
