Miller Time???
Four and a half years and 7499 draft picks after Andrew Miller was selected 6th overall in the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft by the Detroit Tigers, he is still trying to find the mechanics to pitch at a major league level. Seven players taken after him in the first round have become regular contributors on Major League teams, five of which are pitchers (Clayton Kershaw, Drew Stubbs, Tim Lincecum, Max Scherzer, Tyler Colvin, Ian Kennedy, and Boston’s own Daniel Bard).
After college-ball for UNC he was highly thought of going into the 2006 draft. He was so highly thought of that the Tigers rushed him up in September of 2006 after just 5 IP in the minor leagues at Class A level. After dominating the minor leagues in 2007 at Class A and AA the Tigers again called Miller up to start 13 games in 2007. He was sent back to the minors after a disappointing August which saw his ERA jump from 3.76 to 5.62 in just 3 starts. Miller was then part of a blockbuster deal. He was sent to Florida along with fellow top prospect Cameron Maybin (and many others) for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. Florida thought they would be grabbing a stud South Paw for their rotation to replace Willis. He made the team out of camp, struggled and wound up being sent to the minors in July after a 5.63 ERA, when he returned in September it was in the bullpen and with mixed results. His 2009 season went the same as the year before, starting in the majors, getting sent to the minors and returning in September as a reliever. In 2010 Andrew Miller didn’t even make the team and spent the majority of the season starting in AA, where he struggled with an ERA of 6.01. He came back to Florida as a starter at the end of the season and struggled with an ERA of 8.54. After years of frustration Florida traded him to Boston for pitching prospect Dustin Richardson.
Since he is out of Minor League Options, Boston Non-Tendered Miller and brought him back with a Minor-league contract and made him a Non-Roster Invitee to camp. So where does he go from here? His only real success as a starting pitcher has come in Class A ball with a 2.40 ERA in 18 games (13 started), and has struggled so much in AAA that he has only 5 games played and an ERA of 8.15. In turn he seems to have settled as an average starter in AA with a 4.37 ERA in 24 games.
It appears as though Miller, almost 26 years old, will be in competition with Michael Bowden, Scott Atchison, Hideki Okajima, Matt Albers, Rich Hill, Felix Doubront, Alfredo Aceves and Lenny DiNardo for the last spots in what looks to be a very solid bullpen. Miller has been working on fine tuning his mechanics with Boston’s new pitching coach, Curt Young. With any luck he could make it to the majors as a left-handed reliever. If Boston is not confident with Miller’s spring he will be sent to AAA before hoping to make it up, since he is no longer waiver exempt and any chance in Boston could be his only chance before another team may claim him. Whether a trip to AAA means continued work out of the pen or work as a starter remains to be seen. With Boston’s track record of converting starters to solid bullpen contributors Miller’s long journey to the Majors may finally be achieved in the Boston Red Sox bullpen.
