was the 2001 gold half dollar a circulation coin?
my daughter got a kennedy half dollar coin- 2001- GOLD color with a D on it. i tried googling it but can’t find any details on it. is this a circulation coin? a collectors coin? is it worth anything more than 50 cents? it’s obviously been around but it doesn’t look like any of the gold has chipped or worn off.
The coin was gold plated outside the mint. It could have been done by a science class or even one of the private mints for one reason or another. It has no collector value and coin collectors consider it damaged due to the gold coating. The gold is actually micro thin and is worth only a few cents. Since you have said it has been around I am thinking that it may not be gold plated but it may have environmental damage. salt water plus fresh water can turn the copper/nickel clad coins a gold tone if in it long enough. There are also chemicals that are in common use that will do that also. One needs to really see it to determine if it is a gold plate or environmental damage. A coin dealer may help there.
