What is the origin of the marble that was used on the tomb of John Paul Jones?
It is a black and white marble, very beautiful. It was modeled after the tomb of Napoleon, very ornate. John Paul Jones is interred at the Naval academy in Baltimore, Maryland.

The sarcophagus was made of 21 short tons (19 t) of Grand Pyrenees marble.
It is a type of more rare marble found in the Pyrenees Mountains of Spain / France.
The marble cut there tends to be darker …. black, deep cherry red, dark purple ….. with white marbling…. this one being, of course, black, marbled with white.
Unfortunately, I cannot give you the EXACT type of marble it is though… there is no such marble name as Grand or Royal Pyrenees.
It is quite similar to Griotte (deep cherry-red) and Cannes Marble.
I am sure that if you contacted the US Naval Academy Chapel where he is interred in the crypt beneath the Chapel, that they would gladly tell you.
