What do you use a marshmallow plant for???

We took a trip to monticello to see Jefferson’s house. While exploring the gardens we came across a marshmallow plant, and I want to know what they are used for. Thanks

I believe marshmallow is used in medicinal tea’s and has laxative properties. I’ve seen a Chinese weight loss tea on the shelf, and marshmallow was the sole ingredient.
