Why did Thomas Jefferson pick meriwether lewis and william clark to lead the expedition?

Jefferson first asked Meriwether Lewis (because, at the time he had been Jeffersons private secretary for two years).
So I guess he was someone Jefferson could trust.

It was then Lewis who chose William Clark as his partner.
