Indiana Statehood

silver indiana statehood quarter?
it has a “P” mint mark and i have found out that they only made silver statehood quarters with a “S” mint mark could this be an error coin?
I suppose it’s not impossible, but I’d put it in the “very, very unlikely” category.
A 90% silver quarter should weigh 6.25 grams, while a clad quarter weighs 5.67, so the easiest thing to do is weigh it.
Assuming it’s actually a clad quarter, and you suspected it was silver because of the edge of the coin, there are a couple of possibilities. One is that someone chose to silver plate the coin after it left the mint.
The other takes a little explanation, but bear with me. Our “clad” coins are made out of three layers–outer layers of 25% nickel, 75% copper, bonded to a pure copper core.
When the blanking press punches the blanks out of the large rolls of metal, the punch sometimes “pulls” metal from the top layer to partially cover the copper core, and part of the core down to cover the edge of the bottom layer. I’ve seen coins where so much of the top layer got pulled down that it completely covered the copper. What you end up with is a coin with a silver colored edge.
